Breeding programme common spadefoot running smoothly
Due to its mysterious way of life, the population of common spadefoots in Belgium has declined dramatically. Contemporary techniques make it possible to give the population a boost. Lily Gora of Nature and Forests of the Flemish government guides us through the process of growing and releasing the toads, as you can see here in the video of ‘Onze Natuur’.
The breeding and introduction of these magnificent animals is part of a LIFE BNIP project. Within this project specific actions are taken for no less than 5 species, including the common spadefoot. For example, the habitat of the garlic toad has already been restored in 3 areas in Limburg, the breeding programme is running smoothly and improving the connectivity between several habitats is high on the agenda.
